Memories may contain images, but only insofar as the original perception that is remembered was consciously under a description. What is remembered is the description, and imagination fills in the images that are supposed to correspond to that description. This is easily checked by asking for details that ought normally to have formed an integral part of a perception (what shoes did he wear, with what latches, etc.). With regard to memory we must be indirect realists (albeit not of the representationalist variety). Cf. Dancy
