Acquaintance, principle of. We may base our knowledge claims on testimony, not our aesthetic judgements. We must be acqainted with an work of art to judge it, because in art appreciation the empathetic imagination actively makes up for a restricted addressing by the artwork of our senses. Only in polymodally embodied coherence do the data of our senses amount to the perception which lies at the basis of our moral agency. Cf.Wollheim; Aesthetic evaluations, intimation, aesthetic properties.
