J’ay vû icy Mr Picot que ie reconnois pour homme de fort bon sens et qui m’oblige a estre fort son serviteur ie croy qu’il viendra auiourdhuy a Leyde pour s’y arester. Il a un gentilhomme de Touraine en sa compagnie qui m’a fait des baizemains du pere Bourdin dont il est disciple, et aussy m’a parlé en tels termes du sieur Petit que cela m’a obligé d’adoucir ce que i’avois escrit de luy comme vous verres en la preface au lecteur, que ie vous envoye pour la faire imprimer s’il vous plaist au commen- cement du livre apres l’epitre dedicatoire a Mrs de la sorbone, et on n’imprimera point la 4e partie du discours de la Methode ny la petite preface que i’avois mise en suite ny aussy celle qui precedoit les obiections du Theologien mais seulement le Synopsis. English translationI met Mr Picot here, in whom I recognize a man of good sense, and to whom I am much obliged. I believe he will arrive at Leiden today and has the intention to stay. In his company is a nobleman from Touraine who brought me the greetings from Father Bourdin, whose student he is; he also spoke of Mr Petit in such terms that I am obliged to tone down what I wrote on him in the Preface to the reader, which I send you now to be printed, if you please, at the beginning of the book, after the dedicatory letter to the Gentlemen of the Sorbonne. Neither the fourth part of the Discours de la méthode, nor the little preface I put in next, nor the one preceding the theologian’s objections, must be printed, but only the Synopsis. Finally, rest assured that there is nothing in Mr Gassendi’s objections with which I have problems; the only thing I shall have to attend to is the style. Indeed, he expressed himself with so much elegance, that I should attempt to reply in the same way. I am Your much obliged and affectionate

Ook heeft hij me in zodanige termen aangesproken over de heer Petit dat ik wel gedwongen ben om datgene wat ik over hem geschreven had wat te verzachten, zoals u zult zien zien in het Voorwoord aan de lezer. Ik stuur het u toe met het vriendelijke verzoek het te doen drukken, en wel vooraan in het boek na de Opdracht aan de heren van de Sorbonne.
