Current Project

Diogenes Laertius’ Book III: The Life of Plato (PhD dissertation; Supervisor: Teun L. Tieleman, Utrecht University, Department of Philosophy,  2005-

The work of Diogenes Laertius exemplifies various forms of philosophical literature of the Hellenistic and  Imperial periods , which have been combined in the specific form of Laertian biography: biography proper, epistolography, official documents, exposition of doctrine as well as other elements. Book III is studied with a view to the Platonists’ self-identification through retelling Plato’s life and establishing a doctrinal canon. The choice for book III is motivated—apart from its comparative neglect—by the possibility of comparison with more or less contemporary Platonist literature (e.g. Apuleius, Alcinous) but also Christian authors such as Clement of Alexandria. The project thus does not remain confined to a source critical analysis but is innovative in its approach, involving the contemporary context(s) including reader-expectations, literary conventions etc. This study of book III will contribute to a fuller understanding of Diogenes’ work as a whole.
