Please consult the website of the Julius School of Physics and Astronomy for information about admission procedures and requirements.
Please inform the student advisor at the earliest stage possible about the courses you are planning to take. The examination committee may need to approve your choice of the curriculum. This is the case for any choice of secondary optional courses, and if you think you qualify for exemptions. The student advisor will tell you how and when you should present your curriculum to the examination committee for approval.
In the OSIRIS study information system you can register for course offerings and tests, review your results and course schedule, and update your address details.
When you've finished (most) courses, usually at the end of your first year, you can start your research. You have to find a supervisor, who will help you get started. The supervisor has to be one of the staff members associated with this Master's Programme (see the staff list). As soon as you're about to really get started, please fill in the research schedule.
The end product of your research, your Master's Thesis, will be examined by your supervisor plus a second reader, who will be appointed by the examination committee. You, or your supervisor, can suggest a second reader to the examination committee. You're also expected to hold a public colloquium about your research, which will be part of the examination.
When you have finished all study components, the graduation is only an administrative (and generally also festive) formality. Each year there are 5 opportunities to take off an examination. You must have registered 14 days before the examination date at the information counter of the BOZ in the Minnaert building, room 119, tel. 030-2531016, (preferably earlier). Registration is possible even if you haven't yet completed all necessary study components or haven't received all results. The last marks must be known at the BOZ at the latest four weekdays before the examination date.
If you want to graduate in a month in which no diploma granting takes place, you should let Janneke van Lith (e-mail: Janneke.vanLith@phil.uu.nl) know. As the secretary of the exam committee, she may issue a graduation statement (the diploma granting takes place during the next granting date). The graduation statement can be important for a possible refund of tuition fees, when applying for social security and accepting a job. For more details, please consult the faculty website.
If you have any complaints concerning the examinations, please contact the examination committee.
